Why "Coquina"?

Coquina (co-KEE-nuh) is the native stone used for centuries in fences, fortifications, and foundations of the Oldest City. St. Augustine wouldn’t be the same without it … the city was literally built with this rock. We hope to point to a greater, stronger, more precious foundation stone, that of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:20).

What’s more, coquina is formed of small shells - tiny, broken shells - which alone are at the whim of wind and wave. But cemented together, these shells become strong, durable and useful. We, too, though broken and imperfect, are brought together in union with Christ by the eternal bond of His grace to demonstrate His love, mercy and power.

The Church that Christ is building will:

  • proclaim the wisdom of her Builder (Ephesians 3:10)
  • be a pillar and support of His truth (1 Timothy 3:15)
  • proclaim the excellencies of Him who delivered us (1 Peter 2:9)
  • prevail for all eternity (Matthew 16:18)
  • For this we have been brought together.
