Hope Continually (week 34)

Luke Brodersen

Our Goal: To labor in knowing and doing everything Scripture says about prayer.

Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer

“Let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.” (Hebrews 12: 28)

“One day you will love God with all your heart - no wandering desires to deny, no lingering limitations to overcome, no recurring temptations to refuse. Until then, ask God to help you love him more.” - Marshall Segal

Congregational Bible Prayer (recite as a congregation)

A Prayer from Psalm 71

“In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come;
for you are my rock and my fortress.

O God, from my youth you have taught me,
and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me,
until I proclaim your might to another generation,
your power to all those to come.

Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens.
You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?
You who have made me see many troubles and calamities
will revive me and comfort me again.
I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more.”

Bible Prayer Story

The Call of Jeremiah - Jeremiah 1: 4-10

Middle East - Asia Map.jpg

Prayer for the Nations

Father, we pray for your Church and the peoples of Asia and the Middle East, that by your grace they may “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which [they] have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4: 1-3) To this end, we pray for the nations and people of:

Saudi Arabia (King Salman)
Saudi Arabia is the modern location of the birthplace of Islam, and is one of the world's largest oil producers. It stands out for its espousal of a puritan version of Sunni Islam, including harsh punishments such as public beheadings, and its restrictions on the rights of women.
Lord, we grieve with you over the cruel mistreatment of women and those subject to the harsh punishments of Saudi Arabia’s strict form  of Islam. We pray that you would supply your church here with wisdom and endurance to withstand persecution as they boldly proclaim Christ as sovereign.

Singapore (President Yacob)
Once a British colonial trading post, Singapore is a thriving global financial hub. The country is densely populated, and its trade-driven economy is heavily supported by foreign workers. The government forecast that by 2030 immigrants will make up more than 50% of the population.
Holy Spirit, we pray that you would use your church to spark revival in Singapore, proclaiming the gospel to all nations by proxy of the multi-ethnic and multicultural population of this island nation.

South Korea (President Moon)
South Korea has developed into one of Asia's most affluent countries since partition in 1948. At a summit meeting in April 2018, President Moon and the North's Kim Jong-un agreed to end hostile actions and work towards reducing nuclear arms on the peninsula.
Jesus, we praise you for the incremental steps toward peace between North and South Korea in recent years. We ask that you would grant national leaders wisdom as they continue to negotiate, and that this peaceful resolution would open the doors for the gospel to enter the closed of North through your church in South Korea.

Sri Lanka (President Sirisena)
Lying off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has attracted visitors for centuries with its natural beauty, but it has been scarred by a long and bitter civil war arising out of ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamil minority. Recriminations over abuses by both sides continue.
Father, we pray that you would do the work of healing the scars left from the wrongs done by both sides in Sri Lanka’s civil war. Use your church to lead the way in forgiveness and reconciliation, and allow your gospel to unite, in mind and spirit, this people divided by hate and animosity.

Syria (President Assad)
Once the center of the Islamic Caliphate, Syria covers an area that has seen invasions and occupations over the ages, from Romans and Mongols to Crusaders and Turks. Since 2011, political power has been contested in a bitter civil conflict initially sparked by the “Arab Spring” which evolved into a complex war involving regional and international powers and triggered the modern refugee crises in the Middle East.
Lord, if the images we see from Syria were happening in our own backyard, we would be inconsolable. Remove the prejudice from our hearts so that we can grieve with those who are grieving (Romans 12: 15-16) and be moved toward compassion and kindness for those affected by the widespread destruction in Syria. Over the centuries, the church and numerous countries, including our own, have played a part in the abuse of the Syrian people, whether in “the name of God” or the name of policy. Break our hearts for what breaks yours and let us join with your true Church in befriending refugees, caring for the orphaned and widowed, and mending that which has been broken as we seek to usher in your Kingdom.

Taiwan (President Tsai)
Taiwan is an island that has for all practical purposes been independent since 1950, but which China regards as a rebel region that must be reunited with the mainland - by force if necessary. Despite its diplomatic isolation, Taiwan has become one of Asia's major economic players, and one of the world's top producers of computer technology.
Holy Spirit, we thank you for the ways in which you have preserved Taiwan and her freedoms against all odds. We pray that you would use this tiny island as a launching pad for your gospel into the many closed off neighboring nations that the gospel is struggling to be introduced to.

Tajikistan (President Rahmon)
Battered by a five-year civil war at the onset of its independence, Tajikistan has struggled with poverty and instability in the two decades since it became its own state. The country remains strongly dependent on Russia, both for its economy and to help counter security problems, as well as to help fight drug smuggling from neighboring Afghanistan and an emerging radical Islam movement.
Jesus, we pray that you would give political leaders wisdom as they seek to strengthen Tajikistan’s infrastructure and security, moving toward greater independence. Protect this young nation from the influences of militant Islam and totalitarian governments, and amid the ongoing turmoil plant gospel seeds that will take root and drastically alter the trajectory of this nation and other neighboring nations in this region.
