Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer

“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”” (Luke 20:46-47)

Congregational Bible Prayer (say together)

A Prayer from Psalm 107:16-21

“Praise God! For he has broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.
Because of my transgression,
And because of my iniquities, I was afflicted.

My soul abhorred all manner of food,
And I drew near to the gates of death.
Then I cried out to the Lord in my trouble,
And he saved me out of my distresses.

He sent his Word and healed me,
And delivered me from my destruction.
Praise God! and give thanks to the Lord for his goodness,
And for his wonderful works to the children of men!”

Bible Prayer Story - 1 Kings 3:4-14

4 Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”

6 And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”

Prayer Principle

When we seek God‘s Kingdom first, God gives us good things that we don’t even ask for or think of.

Prayer for the Nations

Father, today as we pray for our nation, we echo the prayer of the psalmist:

“God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause Your face to shine upon us,
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us,
And all the ends of the earth shall honor Him.”
(Psalm 67:1-7)

To that end, we pray for our nation’s government and political leaders. We pray for President Trump, Vice President Pence, the members of the president’s cabinet, for our state and local leaders, judges, police men and women, firefighters and first responders, and all of their families. We ask that you would give them grace, wisdom, discernment, so that they may “outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10).

We pray for our nation’s military and it’s leaders, asking that you would give them divine protection, courage, and reveal yourself to them so that they may learn to depend on Christ.

We pray for our nation’s media, that it would be a source of truth-bearing and life-giving dialogue that would contribute to unity.

We pray for our nation’s businesses, that they would lead with integrity, be an economic blessing, and share in their resources with their communities.

We pray for our nation’s educational sector, that it would be truth-centered, driven to excellence, and create and offer opportunity for all to learn and better themselves and their communities.

We pray for our nation’s churches, that their message would be gospel-centered, that they would produce faithful disciples sent on mission, and that your Holy Spirit would empower them to come together in unity.

Lastly, we pray for our nation’s families, that you would root them in Scripture, reconcile broken relationships, and restore them to love and unity.

We ask all this, that it may glorify your name and make it on earth as it is in Heaven, bringing your Kingdom and righteousness to all people. Through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Command of Christ

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust..” (Matthew 5:43-45)

Confession - Forgiveness

“We have sinned with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity,
We have done wickedly.
Nevertheless, He saved us for His name’s sake,
That He might make His mighty power known.” (Psalm 106:6,8)

Benediction

“But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:10-11)
