Prayer Guides

Give thanks in all circumstances (week 6)

Luke Brodersen

Our Goal: To labor in knowing and doing everything Scripture says about prayer.

Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

“Embrace everyday blessings and you will be transformed by God’s grace. So give thanksgiving to God lavishly, especially when you don’t feel like it.” - Lisa Henderson

Congregational Bible Prayer

A Prayer from Psalm 8

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet.
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Bible Prayer Story

“Then Job answered the Lord and said: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:1-2)

Prayer Principal

The whole of Scripture echos what we learn from the story of Job: that when we pray, we should “ask in faith, with no doubting,” (James 1:6) and “give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Prayer for the Nations

Lord, we pray for your Church in North America and Central America, asking that “the testing of their faith would produce steadfastness, and that steadfastness would have its full effect, that they may be perfect and complete [in your grace], lacking in nothing.” (James 1:3-4). To this end, we pray for:

Belize (Prime Minister Barrow)
Father, we pray for fruitful gospel partnership that would empower Belizean disciples to provide culturally appropriate ministry to the lesser-reached.

Bermuda (Queen Elizabeth II)
Holy Spirit, use this small island to make your name known and be a far-reaching blessing to the nations through its economy, expatriate workers, and tourism.

Canada (Prime Minister Trudeau)
Jesus, restore yourself as once again being central and integral among the hearts and minds of the increasingly secular and post-Christian Canadian culture.

Costa Rica (President Quesada)
Lord,  teach Costa Rican disciples to make disciples. Renew and revive the nominal Catholic church through the work of your Holy Spirit. Use your people in Costa Rica to care for the poor and immigrants among them.

El Salvador (President Cerén)
Father, thank you for the miracle of multiplying the number of evangelicals from 2.3% to 28% among Salvadorans since 1960, through times of war and bloodshed. Protect her people amid drug and gang related violence.

Greenland (Prime Minister Kielsen)
Holy Spirit, invigorate the many rural churches across Greenland to be filled with mission-minded disciples, and use this predominantly Christian nation to be a missions center to the world.

Guatemala (President Morales)
Jesus, may your church in Guatemala do the long and hard work of making disciples that bless and serve their nation, working to end the plague of murder and violence and replacing it with peace in Christ.

Honduras (President Hernández)
Lord, rescue Honduras from the lasting effects of  hurricane Mitch and more recently hurricane Michael, the powerful gangs, 60% of Central America’s AIDS cases, and the massive levels of poverty.

Mexico (President López-Obrador)
Father, please restrain the massive drug trade and gang violence that pervades Mexico - caused by both the USA’s insatiable habit and Mexico’s own growing satisfaction. Provide peace and wisdom amid the migrant caravan crisis.

Nicaragua (President Ortega)
Holy Spirit, bless and provide for the Christian support ministries and development projects for urban and rural communities that contribute to the socio-economic and spiritual growth of Nicaragua.

Panama (President Varela)
Jesus, thank you for the continued spiritual interest and responsiveness of Panamanians. Multiply disciples among your church in Panama, and revive the nominal Catholics that comprise the majority of Panama’s population.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon (President Macron)
Lord, breathe new life into the nominal Catholic church and use these small, French islands with a population smaller than our town of St. Augustine to spread your gospel and make your name known among all nations.

Congregational Personal Prayers

Father, we pray for our Coquina church family, that all the members of this body would “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;” (Colossians 1:10).

Command of Christ

“Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:9-11)

Confession for Forgiveness

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)

“God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:19-20)
