Our Goal: To labor in knowing and doing everything Scripture says about prayer.
Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer
““The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;” because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:8-9)
“Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault-finding or finger-pointing, but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he now has in store.” - N.T. Wright
Congregational Bible Prayer
A Prayer from Psalm 91
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For you, O Lord, are my refuge! You have said:
“You have made the Most High your dwelling place—
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
For I will command my angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Because you hold fast to me in love, I will deliver you;
I will protect you, because you know my name.
When you call to me, I will answer you;
I will be with you in trouble;
I will rescue you and honor you.
With long life I will satisfy you
and show you my salvation.””
Bible Prayer Story
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.’”
9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. (Luke 4:1-13)
Lent Reflection & Weekly Fast
“It is a good day to me when thou givest me a glimpse of myself;
Sin is my greatest evil, but thou art my greatest good.”
- Excerpt from a prayer in “The Valley of Vision”
This week, take time to fast from food. This can be done by fasting from a single meal each day, or by setting aside one whole day to fast. Use this exercise following in Christ’s footsteps to remind yourself of your greatest need: God. Fill yourself with his word. Seek the water that will not leave you thirsty. When you feel the pangs of hunger, use this to remind yourself that only through seeking after the “bread of life” can you resist sin in times of temptation.
Congregational Personal Prayers
Father, we pray for our family of believers at Coquina Community Church, that by your grace you would “grant us to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together we may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Command of Christ
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
Confession for Forgiveness
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!”
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13)
