It's Okay to Ask (week 23)

Luke Brodersen

Our Goal: To labor in knowing and doing everything Scripture says about prayer.

Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15)

“Prayer is not only asking, but an attitude of mind which produces the atmosphere in which asking is perfectly natural.” - Oswald Chambers

Congregational Bible Prayer

A Prayer from Psalm 104

“O Lord, how manifold are your works!
   In wisdom have you made them all;
   the earth is full of your creatures.
These all look to you,
   to give them their food in due season.
When you give it to them, they gather it up;
   when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
   when you take away their breath, they die
   and return to their dust.
When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
   and you renew the face of the ground.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
   may the Lord rejoice in his works!
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
   I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
Praise the Lord!”

Prayer for the Nations

Father, we pray for your Church and the peoples of South America, that by your grace they would “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to Your glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy” (Colossians 1:10-11) To this end, we pray for the nations and people of:

Argentina (President Macri)
Lord, Argentina has been troubled by military coups and the vagaries of the populist Peronist movement, while the economy has been prey to dramatic booms and recessions. We pray for protection and spiritual health.

Bolivia (President Morales)
Holy Spirit, Bolivia has been hurting long-running tensions over the exploitation and export of the resource, and crop eradication programs have incensed many of Bolivia's poorest farmers for whom coca crops are often the only source of income. Give political leaders wisdom and provide for the poor and needy.

Brazil (President Bolsonaro)
Jesus, thank you that over the past few years Brazil has made major strides in its efforts to raise millions out of poverty, although the gap between rich and poor remains wide. The exploitation of the Amazon rainforest, much of which is in Brazil, has been a major international worry, since the wilderness is a vital regulator of the climate. Please raise up your church to care for the poor and for your creation in a way that reflects your heart.

Chile (President Piñera)
Father, since the 17-year rule of General Augusto Pinochet, whose 1973 coup was one of the bloodiest in 20th-century Latin America and whose dictatorship left more than 3,000 people dead and missing, Chile has been one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations. Thank you for your healing power, and use Chilean Christians to be a light and a source of comfort to their neighbors facing much of the unrest and turmoil their nation has moved past.

Colombia (President Márquez)
Lord, Colombia has been ravaged by a decades-long violent conflict involving outlawed armed groups, drug cartels, and gross violations of human rights. By your grace, heal this nation and let mercy and love cover the multitude of sins that have crippled Colombia.

Ecuador (President Moreno)
Holy Spirit, Ecuador's economy was transformed from it’s farming roots after the 1960s by the growth of industry and the discovery of oil, and since there has been rapid growth and progress in health, education, and housing. Give Ecuador’s leaders wisdom in how to steward this new found wealth of resources, and use them to be a blessing and help bring their neighboring nations back to their feet.

French Guiana (President Alexandre)
Jesus, this ethnically-diverse population enjoys one of the higher standards of living in the continent, propped up by the French social security system and subsidies; yet, a lack of infrastructure has hindered its economical growth, and street violence in the 1990s, fueled partly by high youth unemployment, caused tension with France. Give political leaders the wisdom to navigate if autonomy is beneficial, and raise up leaders and creative minds from the church to help provide the necessary infrastructure for this nation to grow.

Guyana (President Granger)
Father, since independence from the UK in 1966, Guyana has seen fierce political rivalry between the two main ethnically-based parties. Guyana has struggled to overcome poverty, and now a century-old border dispute with Venezuela has revived after the discovery of offshore oil reserves. Give Guyana peace and unity, and use your church to lead the way forward.

Paraguay (President Benítez)
Lord, political unrest, corruption, and chronic economic problems have plagued the country's fragile democracy since it emerged from the 35-year dictatorship of the late Gen Alfredo Stroessner in 1989. Around a quarter of Paraguayans live below the national poverty line, and this has been exploited as Paraguay has long been associated with drug-smuggling and other contraband trade. Give this nation and its people rest and justice, and use your church to point the poor, hurting, and needy to you as the Great Comforter.

Peru (President Vizcarra)
Holy Spirit, Peru has been experiencing an economic boom, but that is overshadowed by Peru having become the world's leading producer of cocaine and the country still trying to come to terms with the trauma of a two-decade conflict between the state and leftist guerrilla groups, the latter of which still has a following. We pray that you would raise up leaders for fight for justice and protect their communities, and grant Peru’s leaders the wisdom to leverage their new economic health to heal the lasting wounds of this nation and oust drug cartels.

Suriname (President Bouterse)
Jesus, since independence from the Netherlands in 1975 Suriname has endured coups and a civil war, and due to most of its people being descended from African slaves and Indian and Javanese indentured laborers brought over by the Dutch to work in agriculture, most political parties are forged and fueled by ethnic divides. Create a spirit of peace and unity among the diverse Suriname people, and build up your church here to reflect the diversity of your kingdom and creation.

Uruguay (President Vázquez)
Father, economic and political turmoil in the early 1970s led the government of the day to suspend the constitution and launch a period of repressive military rule that lasted until 1985. Uruguay has since been on a path of healing and rebuilding, but reveal yourself as the firm foundation upon which Uruguay should build.

Venezuela (President Guaidó & President Maduro)
Lord, many Venezuelans live in poverty, often in shanty towns. Former president Hugo Chavez , who died in 2013, styled himself a champion of the poor during his 14 years in office, pouring billions of dollars of Venezuela's oil wealth into social programs. But the government of his successor, Nicolas Maduro, has had to struggle with plummeting oil prices and an economic and political crisis that has left Venezuela in a state of near-collapse, and now political turmoil has stirred due to Juan Guaidó challenging the incumbent president and receiving backing from several other nations. Give the nation and people of Venezuela stability; strengthen and embolden your church to care for the poor and provide in the ways that an unstable government cannot.
