To Turn Your Mourning Into Dancing, Take it to God (week 27)

Luke Brodersen

Our Goal: To labor in knowing and doing everything Scripture says about prayer.

Bible Verse & Quote on Prayer

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

“Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.” - Corrie Ten Boom

Congregational Bible Prayer

A Prayer from Psalm 30

“Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,
and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger is but for a moment,
and his favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
To you, O Lord, I cry,
and to the Lord I plead for mercy:
“What profit is there in my death,
if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it tell of your faithfulness?
Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!”
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”

Bible Prayer Story

Naaman Healed of Leprosy - 2 Kings 5:1-14

Prayer for the Nations

Father, we pray for your Church and the peoples of Africa, that by your grace their “love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that [they] may approve what is excellent, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11)
To this end, we pray for the nations and people of:

Liberia (President Weah)
Lord, around 250,000 people were killed in Liberia's civil war in the 1990s, and many thousands more fled the fighting. Today, corruption is rife and unemployment and illiteracy are endemic. Liberians are faced with a shortage of electricity and running water. Provide for the needs of your church here, and by your grace compel them to share all that they have like the early church, that others may see their good works and give glory to God.

Libya (Prime Minister Sarraj)
Holy Spirit, the toppling of long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 led to a power vacuum and instability, with no authority in full control. The country has since splintered into competing factions, and in recent years has been a key springboard for migrants heading for Europe, as well as a source of international concern over the rise of jihadist groups. We pray for peace in this unsettled region, and that you would give your church the joy and endurance necessary to persevere.

Madagascar (President Rajaonarimampianina)
Jesus, since gaining independence from France in 1960, Madagascar has experienced repeated bouts of political instability, including coups, violent unrest and disputed elections. This nation is one of the world’s poorest, heavily reliant on foreign aid, and despite the return of democratic elections in 2013, the political situation remains fragile. Grant political leaders wisdom as to how to lead and steward resources, and reveal yourself as the greatest treasure worth having.

Malawi (President Mutharika)
Father, Malawi is making efforts to overcome decades of underdevelopment, corruption and the impact of an HIV-Aids problem, which claims the lives of tens of thousands every year. Malawi is one of the world's worst-hit by HIV-Aids and home to more than one million children orphaned by the disease. Lead your church here to care for the widow and the orphan, and reveal yourself as Father and Friend to those who have been abandoned.

Mali (President Keita)
Lord, since gaining independence in 1960, Mali suffered droughts, rebellions, a coup and 23 years of military dictatorship until democratic elections in 1992. Meanwhile, a jihadist insurgency in Mali's north and central regions continues, with al-Qaeda-linked militants carrying out attacks. Dispel of the evil forces laying siege upon this people and land - both physical and spiritual - and reclaim what has been made in your image and for your glory.

Mauritania (President Aziz)
Holy Spirit, in the Middle Ages Mauritania was the cradle from which Islam spread throughout the region and for a while controlled the Islamic part of Spain. Today, it is seen by the West as a valuable ally in the fight against Islamist militancy in the Sahel region. More than that, Holy Spirit, grip the hearts of men, women, and children in this region, ushering them from death into life, and use this nation as a lighthouse in the region to dispel darkness and call others from death to life.

Mauritius (President Vyapoory)
Jesus, Mauritius is a stable and prosperous Indian Ocean archipelago. Use this stability to bless her neighbors and to supply your church with resources to make a great impact for your Kingdom.

Morocco (King Mohammed VI)
Father, Mohammed VI became monarch in 1999. Since, he has initiated political and economic changes and an investigation into human rights abuses during his father's rule. A key reform under his rule is the Mudawana, a law which grants more rights to women, which he believes is in line with Koranic principles, but religious conservatives have opposed it. We thank you for the positive change being enacted through this ruler, and moreover we pray that you would call himself to you so that eternal change can be carried out through his rule.

Mozambique (President Nyusi)
Lord, Mozambique is still suffering from the effects of a 16-year civil war that ended in 1992. Tensions remain between the ruling Frelimo party and the opposition former rebel movement Renamo and corruption has become a major concern. We pray for peace in this nation, and that by your grace those who oppose one another would see each other as part of one eternal family made in your image.

Congregational Personal Prayers

Father, we pray for the body of Coquina, that by your grace toward each of us you “may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do” (Jeremiah 42:3), giving us the strength and discernment daily to take up our cross and follow you.

Command of Christ

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Confession for Forgiveness

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8)

“May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:2)
