Listen to this sermon in mp3 format: A Letter to the Exiles - Seek the City to Come.
INTRO: Last we were here, the people were on the far shore of the sea singing a song of salvation and their Savior
How quickly things turn from celebrating to surviving
From the heights of triumph to depths of despair
They forget what God has done
Allie, our black lab: we just adopted a dog from the humane society who is, we thought, perfect in just about every way…sits on command, fetches, loves the kids, housebroken. And she acted as if she understood that we had rescued her from the bondage of the pound
Until you get near her food dish. Get near her food, and she wants to bite the hand that feeds her.

Our membership process sounds like a marriage ceremony
And in reality it is. It is a “wedding”, a membering of many into one
So we have a covenant, a relationship of promise, that we vow to live in a certain way with one another, just as in a marriage you have a marriage covenant, vows, that you tell the other person how you intend to live with them
Covenant language is actually pretty common in our culture. I was reminded of this recently at an HOA meeting
If you live in a neighborhood, you probably have “covenant restrictions” that speak to what you can and cannot do
how you will LIVE in that community.

Listen to this sermon in mp3 format: A Letter to the Exiles - Seek the City to Come.
REVIEW:
Seek the gospel (think gospel, think Kingdom, think Kingdom, think King)
Seek future generations
Seek the city…by engaging and enlarging our spheres of influence,
We’re seeking New life for the Oldest City
not seeking to change the city, not take it over
But to faithfully live and serve in such a way that the knowledge of the glory of the Lord covers the earth as the waters cover the sea.
Finally and ultimately, we’re called to seek the city TO COME

What it means to enjoy and embody the gospel by
Seeking the King first, and the Kingdom
seeking the future generations for the glory of God and good
seeking the city
Here’s our basic premise:
Jesus has SENT you (Jn 17:18 and 20:21) just as the Father sent him
For the glory of God and the good of others
And he’s sent you, very specifically, here, NOW, to this place
To SEEK Him IN this place, yes
But also to seek Him FOR this place and these people
And we’ll examine the nuances of that in a minute

The gospel is radically God-centered, focused on Him and His glory
Think gospel, think Kingdom; think Kingdom, think King Jesus
The kingdom is NOTHING if the King isn’t EVERYTHING
But the gospel is also radically other-centered
King Jesus was “the sent one,” sent by the Father to seek two primary things:
The glory of God (b/c Jesus is radically God-centered)
That which was lost…Us, that we might know God in all His glory
that’s what we call salvation

This month, we’re going to step out of Exodus the book
But not out of what it means to be living a life of exodus
We’re going to continue to look at life thru the eyes of exile
Using Jer 29 as a springboard
The people of God are a people of exile: A people NOT in their homeland
It’s a repeated scenario in the OT
Then in the NT, Peter calls those who follow Jesus to live as exiles, sojourners, strangers with regard to their life here (1 Pet 1:1, 2:11)
